===============================================
Solar Rock III at Hemel Park, Tucson AZ. March 27th, 2010
"Solar Rock is an annual 100% Solar Powered festival that aims to
educate individuals about renewable energy, climate change, and
sustainability. This free public event features local music, speeches
from renowned scientists and local leaders, and educational booth
displays from area businesses, non profits, and government agencies.
Solar Rock aims to increase public awareness of climate change issues
and in doing so, put pressure on elected officials to prioritize clean
energy and strategies for reducing carbon dioxide in our atmosphere." Quote from www.solarrock.wordpress.com News Release about Festival, a .pdf file

>>> Kids get rides on hover craft made from a leaf blower!

Special thanks to "The Physics Factory" for the hovercraft for the kids to
ride on, made from a leafblower and inverter, battery rig... very clever. A
little noisy but easily solar powered. That was a show stopper for the
kids.

Cooking lunch with large Fresnel lens and a little help from the Sun.

Get cool with sun power? Sounds odd but works great with Solar Chill.
All sizes available. See them at <www.southwest-solar.com>

One of the many commercial solar ovens available.

There were so many great things at the festival, I didn't have time for everything!!!

28th Annual Solar Potluck & Exhibition- April 4, 2010
Catalina State Park, 11570 N. Oracle Road.
"Citizens for Solar invites everyone to come and join in the fun of
the 28th Annual Tucson Solar Potluck and Exhibition. This is the
longest continuously running solar potluck in the world. See practical,
innovative solar energy in useful action. People will be cooking food
in dozens of types of solar ovens. Enjoy solar powered music during the
afternoon and into the evening. Taste solar cooked food, see
photovoltaic solar electricity generated, feel solar cooling, and see
solar powered technology.
Although solar cooked snacks will be provided all day, the solar
potluck feast begins around 5:00 p.m. Either bring your solar oven and
cook with us or bring a dish to share and join in the fun." Courtesy of www.sustainabletucson.org

The 2010 Solar Potluck was a great get-together, but without many patrons.
Our day was quiet and had long visits with friends and neighbors.
Cooking with a re-purposed satellite dish:
You can call this the " Overkill Cooker! This is one hot mama!
Solar Toby's dish was a big hit and his pressure cooker outfit worked well.
A lot of spare ribs came off of this one. All total, we fed about a hundred
people at the end of the day. Not to bad for about 25 ovens and cookers, that's
on top of pizza and snacks all day for the crowd. Hats off to Catalina State
Park for being a great host once again."
CAREFULLY adjusting the pot position.

It was a very nice day and the food was great!

Everyone was cooking something wth solar power.

Energy Saving Tip:
Refuse Delivery!
---------------------
I was asking a solar savvy friend what kind of paint I could use on the
East side of my house to keep the walls from heating up so much on
intense summer mornings, and he said,
"Refuse Delivery".
What my friend meant was... don't let the sunlight even get to the wall.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Well, I've taken that to heart and, instead of putting up a screen
wall, which would work just fine but require me to actually work (!),
I've planted.
I've planted an orange tree, to be effective in a few years, and in the
mean time, I've also planted sunflowers, corn and climbing veggies,
like beans, peas and squash vines, that will appreciate the morning
sun, be thankful for the afternoon shade, and provide me with
groceries.HEY!!!
An roof overhang will deny direct sun access to your South wall in the
summer, but denying that morning sun on the East side of the house will
help to keep that side of your house at least 10 degrees cooler most of
the day. That will help you to save $$$ and be more comfortable.
! ! ! ! !
By the way, until the little veggies get thick enough to completely
shade your wall, get help from a great insulation product in the
window. I use a superb, inexpensive product called ReflectixR
You can get it at hardware stores, RV stores and Home Depot. It is silvered on both sides with two layers of closed-cell plastic bubbles inside.
If I hadn't found this insulation, I would surely have been a crispy critter long ago.
